ALICE WALKER
ORGANIST & AMBASSADOR CHOIR DIRECTOR
Alice finds the most enjoyable parts of working at FPC are twofold, equally important. First, working with Pastor Neeley Rentz Lane and the outstanding staff, and, second, knowing and loving the wonderful people in the Congregation who have become like family members. The opportunity to play the beautiful Wicks pipe organ and the two Steinway pianos in the Sanctuary every Sunday is always a blessing. Alice’s involvement with Pastoral Care, Women’s Ministry, Evangelism, and Prayer Team enrich her opportunities for service at FPC.
Alice discovered early in life, around age five, that she was destined to be a church musician. Alice loved to sit near the pipe organ at First Baptist Church of Atlanta, a large downtown church, and watch the organist, Mrs. Ray Smathers, pull the stops, play the manuals and pedals, and bring beautiful music from the many pipes. |
From age 10 Alice developed a deep interest in church hymnody, church history, composition and especially piano and organ performance. She has for many years been a touring musician with the Georgia Council for the Arts and has played many piano and organ concerts with her identical twin sister Becky Ramsey, who is also a church musician. Graduating from Agnes Scott College with a degree in Music and a specialty in Pipe Organ led Alice naturally into her work as a Church Musician. Alice holds a certification from the American Guild of Organists (CAGO) and (AAGO) and is a member of the Committee on Music and Worship for the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, PC(USA). She has participated in Master Classes in organ with Jean Langlais, Diane Bish, Dr. Alec Wyton, Dr. Roberta Gary, Dr. Tom Trenny, Diane Belcher, and Dr. Gerre Hancock, is a touring Artist for the Southern Arts Federation and the Georgia Council for the Arts, and a lifetime member of Gideons Auxiliary International.
When not at FPC, Alice can be found gardening, often tending her roses, azaleas and lilies in the yard outside her home. Alice loves to read, sew, play online games with family members, exercise, and travel.
Alice believes the best thing about FPC is that it is a Bible-based church of believers who love each other and are committed to reaching others for Christ. Christian harmony and a welcoming spirit toward visitors make FPC a pleasant place to learn and grow. The vibrant Scriptural Sunday School discussions for Adults and the creative Biblical Christian Education opportunities for Children and Youth make FPC a great place to bring the whole family. Alice loves to invite her unchurched friends to FPC, knowing that they will be greeted with a smile, treated with respect, and helped to fit in wherever they feel most comfortable in the church.
